About Let's Torque

Let’s Torque is a STEM public speaking competition for undergraduate students, by undergraduate students, that has been held across Victorian universities since 2017, and now in Western Australia. Co-founders Isobel Campbell and Josh Zail, along with past team members, have studied the Advanced Science - Global Challenges program at Monash University. In this course we are taught the valuable STEM communication skills and it has inspired us to give all undergraduate students the same opportunity!

The mission of the competition is to build students’ STEM communication skills through practice and workshops, and spread exciting STEM concepts that could benefit Australia in the future. After the success of the past two years we are looking to build a dynamic organisation, and grow the competition to reach a wider audience.

We see the tremendous potential to create real-world impact by applying effective communication skills in STEM fields and provide both the resources and platform for other students to learn and practice their craft.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT:

1. Show the real-world potential of STEM solutions.
2. Build the communication skills and confidence of students.
3. Connect students with STEM organisations and industry professionals.

Our Mission Statement:

Let’s Torque WA aims to become the premier destination for undergraduate students in WA to increase their STEMployability and enhance their communication skills in their choice of discipline. We hope to offer students the skills required to stand out in front of future employers, as well as motivate them to undertake research in their scientific passions.

Who are we?

If you’re a STEM professional currently completing your studies or simply looking for work, you might be surprised to hear that we are simply undergraduate science students, much like yourself.

Let’s Torque WA comprises of a collaboration between undergraduate students and the STEM outreach team at Curtin University, with the shared goal of offering students the platform to share their ideas about the future of science while building the invaluable interpersonal skills required for your future career aspirations.

As a student-for-student organisation, we understand the difficulty of attaining appropriate information for your research, as well as the rare communication skills so often sought out by companies. If these are situations that have affected you in the past, then Let’s Torque is the perfect destination for you!

Why WA?

Let’s Torque is a student-led initiative that has been around for numerous years, yet we’ve decided to expand into WA for the very first time. Why is that?

You may have progressed through your university degree and noticed a distinct lack of material related to science communication, as well as the soft skills you need to enhance your employability. This isn’t a purposeful omission, yet your studies only hold proof of how well you can handle technical information, not of how you can effectively communicate your research or innovative ideas to others.

According to a recent census study conducted in Australia, 93% of employers term soft skills as either “very important” or “essential”.

Western Australia has limitless opportunities in scientific research and technological innovation. It’s pivotal that individuals in WA are equipped with the appropriate critical thinking and communication skills to take on the scientific problems that the future will inevitable have in store for us.
