VICTORIAN COMPETITION

The Let’s Torque annual public speaking competition helps unlock new skills in science communication. Communication in the science industry is a crucial component often overlooked. With this statewide, undergraduate competition, we hope to channel student’s skills into a discipline they may be unfamiliar with.

This competition gives participants the chance to hone their communication skills, connect with industry professionals, and win prizes!

Talking Points is the first step to entering the annual public speaking competition. It is designed to see your stem idea and how you will outline it for a presentation.

To register for the Let’s Torque public speaking competition, all you need is to submit your ’Talking Points’ before the deadline. See the Talking Points page for more information on how to submit.

Tell us about a STEM concept and how it has the potential to benefit Australia economically, socially, or environmentally to secure your spot in a Semi-Final. Make sure to read the competition regulations too.

      Entry fees are $5 until entries close. Please note this fee includes all food, beverages and materials for later stages of the competition. If you have any questions about the fee or are unable to play, please contact us!

Semi-Finals

  • Applicants with successful ‘Talking Points’ will progress to a Semi-Final.

  • Semi-finalists will present a speech on their chosen STEM concept (in-person, given that the current pandemic allows it of course!)

  • Slides and visual aids are optional.

Top presenters will be selected from each Semi-Final such that six will advance as Grand Finalists. Remaining spots will be filled at the judges' discretion.

Tune in during to support and celebrate the outstanding finalists from across Victoria as they compete for amazing prizes. The event will feature an esteemed keynote speaker with a judging panel of prominent science communicators!

The event will be held at Royal Society of Victoria.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION

How can you be involved?

By joining the Let’s Torque WA initiative, you can expect to learn a ton of new skills, meet with similar-minded science undergraduates and network with science professionals across multiple fields.

In its first year of running, Let’s Torque WA will be branched into three main events, these are; a skills-building workshop, a one-to-one communications coaching session and the final grand competition. These events will happen across August to September 2022. All of these events are catered and involve fun, engaging activities, but numbers are limited, so get your expressions of interest in ASAP! More details below.

The time has come for Let’s Torque WA’s first ever public speaking competition. Come down to the engineering pavilion at 5pm on the 20th September for a night of discussions, networking and food.
